This paper outlined the workings of the Army’s Recruit Training Battalion including: recruiting & selection procedures, recruit training, factors affecting recruit training, types of problems encountered, behavioural responses, resources available to deal with these responses, & preventative measures. A very small minority of recruits may threaten suicide in response to actual or perceived difficulties. It is stated that almost all of these threats can be considered merely attention-seeking gestures made predominantly to manipulate discharge.
