This article compares the number of suicides to the number of deaths due to motor vehicle accidents, illicit drug use, & AIDS in British Columbia during the period 1995-1998. Suicide deaths equalled or exceeded the number of deaths for each of the other causes. Given these figures, the question is asked why suicide prevention & awareness does not receive the attention or research funding as do the other causes of death. While the suicide rate seems to indicate a downward trend, it is stated there is still work to be done towards reducing the incidence of suicide and suicidal behaviours.
