This article discusses a feature of contemporary suicidal behaviour in Japan, namely contagious clustering. This phenomenon has mainly occurred among adolescents but its incidence has been increasing among middle-aged & elderly people especially as the Japanese economy has experienced a downturn. Cluster suicides, whether among the young or adults, are characterized by a high level of suggestibility.
