This article discusses the occurrence of bipolar disorder in adolescence. Symptoms of major depressive episodes & manic episodes are listed. The risk of suicide for children & adolescents diagnosed with bipolar disorder is discussed. Treatment should be initiated after a thorough evaluation by a child/adolescent psychiatrist. Components of a comprehensive treatment plan are outlined. The treatment of suicidal behaviours should focus on decreasing the severity of the behaviours, reducing the risk factors, & preventing the onset of further suicidal episodes.
