The Firearms Injury Prevention Project developed materials & procedures for preventing firearm suicide in selected country areas of Western Australia. This presentation discussed the Project’s aim of reducing easy access to firearms & to prevent injuries by promoting gun safety knowledge & the safe storage of firearms & ammunition. Strategies devised in consultation with community members were discussed. Evaluation findings of community acceptability & effectiveness of these strategies were outlined. Issues associated with firearm safety, firearm suicides, & rural communities were also discussed to assist future suicide prevention program planning.
