This presentation discussed the role of general practitioners in suicide prevention. Two ways in which they can fulfil this role were described: community education, particularly in rural areas, where public presentations can demystify & explain the nature of mental illness; & 2) the screening of patients in the doctor’s consulting rooms. It is argued even a brief patient visit provides an opportunity to screen for emotional disorders.
