This paper was prepared as part of a process aimed to provide information likely to contribute to a reduction in suicides & parasuicide in the Auckland region. The first stage involved determining the incidence & prevalence of suicide & parasuicide, & identifying the available prevention & care services. The second stage involved regional consultation to enable a plan to be developed which would outline the most appropriate prevention stategions. Recommendations arising from the report included the regular preparation & distribution of a report on incidence & prevalence, an assessment & evaluation of existing prevention programs, & an increase in the availability of overnight hospital facilities for individuals at risk of suicide.
