Approaches to Suicide Prevention in Asia and the Far East (IN: The International Handbook of Suicide and Attempted Suicide, edited by K Hawton & K van Heeringen)
Murthy R S
This overview examines: the way suicide is viewed in major religions of Asia & the Far East; differences in rates across countries; development in suicide prevention in some countries of this region; international developments relevant to the region; & an approach relevant to suicide prevention in the region. The review of developments in suicide prevention presents a pessimistic picture. There is a mismatch between perceptions & actions. There needs to be a realistic plan of action rather than an ideal plan. Intervention has to involve many domains including legal, family, public agencies, formal caregivers, & social policies.
