This chapter addresses prevention strategies which can be applied to whole populations to attempt to reduce suicide rates. By necessity many such strategies, but not all, involve government intervention. Such involvement has received encouragement from recent statements by WHO & the UN. These principles are described & the Finnish model for implementing them highlighted. The efforts being made by a number of other nations receive particular attention. Successful interventions & others, more controversial, are described. (37 refs.)
