Psychotherapeutic Approaches to Suicidal Ideation and Behaviour (IN: The International Handbook of Suicide and Attempted Suicide, edited by K Hawton & K van Heeringen)

This chapter reviews the current psychotherapeutic approaches in the treatment of suicidal ideation & behaviours. Psychotherapeutic approaches which have been developed to the point of examination in randomized controlled trials are first described. Next, general issues in the delivery of psychotherapy to suicidal patients are discussed. Finally, outcomes of randomized, controlled psychotherapy trials, focussing on patients with a history of deliberate self-harm behaviour, are reviewed. (32 refs.)
