In this chapter, the psychosocial problems associated with chronic somatic disorders & the methodological problems associated with studies on the risk of suicidal behaviour in patients with physical illnesses are reviewed. Studies on suicide attempters have shown physical symptoms & disorders are common. Initiatives to prevent suicidal behaviour should include patients with somatic disorders as well as those with other problems, & should involve all relevant professional groups in health and social care.
