This chapter reviews theoretical & empirical aspects of the relationship between psychiatric disorders & suicidal behaviour. Many psychiatric disorders seem to occur together & the boundaries between them are often unclear. There may be 4 comorbid constellations which have special significance for suicide among adolescents & which require vigorous psychiatric intervention: schizophrenia, depression, & substance abuse; substance abuse, conduct disorder, & depression; affective disorder, eating disorder, & anxiety disorders; & affective disorder, personality disorder & dissociative disorders.
