This article describes the case of a 52-year-old suicidal man with a gambling addiction. The patient’s understanding & perceptions of his situation are presented along with an ensuing discussion among a group of physicians. Issues covered include: risk assessment, depression screening, specific inquiry about suicide, determining appropriate intervention, the importance of primary care intervention, the role of medications, & risk assessment & documentation.
