Counselling skills were evaluated in a telephone counselling service for Vietnam veterans. 30 simulated crisis calls were made to telephone counsellors by experienced clinical psychologists. Responses were rated on general counselling skills, knowledge of veterans’ needs & provision of appropriate advice. Most counsellors demonstrated adequate counselling skills. However, many lacked knowledge of veterans’ posttraumatic stress, common veteran terminology, & the nature of veterans’ experiences.
