This article addresses the expression of sexual orientation due to prenatal sex steroids that shape the central nervous system’s development, organization, & structure. Stressors related to isolation, stigma, & violence may predispose homosexual adolescents to impaired social, emotional & physical health. These stressors can can result in depression, suicide, school problems, substance abuse, running away, eating disorders, & illegal conduct. This article serves as an approach to medical, mental, & psychosocial issues within the context of the adolescents’ community & culture. (156 refs.) (AK)
