Why Wasn’t There More Suicides? A Historical Look at Suicide Prevention Intervention and Postvention in Nishnawbe-Aski Nation

This manuscript examines the influence of social programs on the suicide rate in the Nishsawbe-Aski Nation. The article noted a youth driven response to the suicide problem which was implemented in 1993 by the Nishsawbe-Aski Nation Youth Forum on Suicide. Clinical guidelines for the management of mental health emergencies & suicide risk assessment are provided. A description is included of the support program for families bereaved by suicide in the Sioux Lookout area.
