The increasing concern over the number of requests for euthanasia or assisted suicide in Dutch nursing homes is discussed. Directors of patient care in 324 nursing homes were asked, by questionnaire, if they had institutional guidelines. Due to the low number of nursing homes that have written guidelines (58%), the need for a more complete system that includes all the official requirements for prudent practice is discussed. (GS)
