This study explored whether the relationship between unemployment & the suicide rate is linear as predicted by Ginsberg & Henry & Short, or curvilinear as Durkheim predicted. Data for 13 nations for 1950-1985 were studied. Results support a trend for suicide rates to rise as the unemployment rate increases as predicted in Henry & Short’s theory.
