Callahan discussed the difference between acute suicide risk & chronic suicide. Crisis intervention is the traditional model used for acute risk; Callahan suggested that an alternative model, “continuing therapy model”, may be more appropriate for chronic suicidality. The implications of this typology for crisis centres are discussed. The traditional crisis intervention approach may be inappropriate; an alternative model, “emergency triage”, is presented. Legal liability issues are mentioned.
