The Occurrence of Suicide Following the Prescription of Antidepressant Drugs

In 44 (19.8%) cases, the antidepressant had been prescribed within 1 month of the suicide event. Fatal poisoning involving antidepressant overdose occurred significantly more frequently in the cohort who had been prescribed an antidepressant. Fatal poisoning involving antidepressant overdose, occurred in 13 (5.8%) cases. All involved Tricyclic antidepressants either alone (6 cases) or in combination with another substance(s) (7 cases).
