Australian psychiatrist Chris Cantor responds to Lanny Berman’s letter that describes the “blocked escape” theory related to social pressures contributing to suicide ideation. Cantor questions the separation of youth from adult culture as a factor in blocked escape, and the role of freedom of choice in survival skills. Cantor feels that youth choosing their own cultural identity are at risk of becoming socially isolated – a recognized factor in suicide ideation.
