Barraclough (1987) noted that in 14 nations, for those aged 5-14 years, female suicide rates were equal to or greater than male rates during 1972-84. To check the reliability of the finding, suicide rates of 5-14-year-olds in 90 nations were calculated for the period 1986-94. 16 countries reported no suicides in this age group. As in Barraclough’s report, the majority of nations reporting higher rates for females are Latin American & Asian. Possible reasons for this result are briefly discussed.
