The first section of this chapter discusses patient assessment, evaluating suicide attempts, safety issues in the emergency room, & assessing the need for hospitalization. The second part reviews suicide precautions in the general hospital, special risks for medical patients, issues such as noncompliance, & suicide among special medical populations. Other subjects include: rational suicide, psychiatric illnesses & suicide, medical systems & medical caretakers, & clinical implications.
