This chapter surveys the data currently available on electroconvulsive therapy’s effect on suicidal behaviour. In addition, the following topics are discussed: the history of electroconvulsive therapy; suicidal ideation & the use of electroconvulsive therapy including suicide prevention & suicide during electronvulsive therapy; electroconvulsive therapy & the biology of suicide; areas for future research; & implications for the clinician.
