This article is written by Chad Varah, a minister of the Church of St. Stephen Walbrook. Varah is the founder of The Samaritans-a Britain based crisis service for those contemplating suicide. Samaritans are known for the concept of “befriending”-or simply listening to those that need someone to talk to, while reserving psycological refferals for those needing more direct intervention. The Samaritan concept of befriending is used world-wide and Varah describes it’s conception and mandates.
