This article documents the life of Charles Wertenberker, who committed suicide in 1955. Wertenberker, foreign editor of TIME magazine, was diagnosed with abdominal cancer in 1957 and refused life-saving surgery upon learning of the cancer’s progression. Wertenberker decided to stay with his wife at home until his death, attempting suicide several times. He evenutally died of slashed arteries in the wrist and a lethal injection of morphine administered by his wife.
