Individuals presenting with gender dysphoria often do not have problems indicative of coexisting psychiatric illness. Of 318 male-to-female and 117 female-to-male transitions, 12% of the former and 21% of the latter engaged in some form of suicidal gesture. All the suicidal attempts occurred prior to the gender treatment.
