Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in the USA, accounting for more than 30,000 deaths per year. 658 outpatients attending the faculty general internal medicine practice at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, participated in this study. The results suggest that medical patients want to talk to their physicians about mental health issues, and that suicidal patients prefer more regular inquiry about psychiatric symptoms.
