This article discusses the importance of suicide prevention in Alberta. One valuable resource are distress hotlines, since suicidal people are often ashamed of being called crazy by others. This stigma towards suicide hampers prevention efforts. Suicide occurs for many reasons, including the inability to cope with life events & mental illness. Community programs for suicide prevention are discussed. Most important is educating the public of the signs of a potential suicide victim & how to help.
