This report provides Canadian data on firearm ownership, homicides, robberies, offensive weapon offences, deaths, suicides & hospitalization resulting from firearm injuries. In 1996, there were 881 firearm suicides (3.8 per 100,000 population). Firearm suicides accounted for 22.4% of all suicides in 1996. The greatest number of firearm suicides occurred in the 35-54-year age group; however, the percentage of deaths by this method was highest in the 55+ age group.
