This report on prisons in England & Wales from Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons provides statistics and gives information on the prison service and its condition & treatment of prisoners for 1996-97. Mental health care is discussed. About 20,000 prisoners have an identifiable mental health disorder. Of concern are prisoners whom hospitals deem untreatable and thus return to prison. In addition, the number of young prisoners who committed suicide the past year doubled.
