The Samaritans, a volunteer organization that assists people contemplating suicide, is discussed. Volunteer organizations are good for those at risk who choose to avoid health care professionals. The Samaritans’ volunteers are chosen and trained for their ability to listen to those in pain. In the UK & Ireland, Samaritans answer 2.5 million calls a yaer. They believe that by providing the help and the time to listen to someone when they need it most, that they are making a difference. (7 refs.)
