This chapter begins by reviewing the epidemiology of suicide in Europe. Variables which might explain the differences in rates between countries are examined, including: religion, family integration & unemployment. Social factors which affect trends in suicide are discussed. The last part of the chapter describes suicide in The Netherlands during 1900-1949 & 1969-1988. The relationship between suicide mortality & characteristics of a geographic region, e.g. urbanization & religion, is discussed.
