The variation in published estimates of doctors’ relative risk to die by suicide is described. Incidence rates & standardized mortality ratios were calculated for doctors in relation to reference groups. The estimated relative risk varied from 1.1 to 3.4 in male doctors & from 2.5 to 5.7 in female doctors compared to the general population, & from 1.5 to 3.8 in males & 3.7 to 4.5 in females compared to other professions. The crude suicide mortality rate was similar in male & female doctors.
