The increased risk of premature death from natural & unnatural causes for the common mental disorders is described. 152 studies were reviewed. Standardised mortality ratios were calculated for all causes of death, all natural & all unnatural causes. This ratio was also calculated for suicide, other violent causes & specific natural causes. Highest risks of premature death were found in substance abuse & eating disorders. However, all mental disorders have an increased risk of premature death.
