This study tests the hypothesis of genetic factors contributing to the development of bipolar & unipolar affective disorder. This was done by comparing tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) allele frequencies between affective disorder & control groups. 118 bipolar, 125 unipolar, & 437 control subjects were studied. No significant differences were found. In addition, uni & bipolar subjects were compared on the basis of suicide attempts for TPH polymorphism. Again, no differences were found. (18 refs.)
