A coroner’s record review of suicides occurring between 1994-96 demonstrates the preponderance of young males & of Inuit among those committing suicide in the Northwest Territories. The majority of victims committed suicide in familiar settings, usually their own homes, & often while others were on the premises. 36% of those who committed suicide had experienced a recent family or relationship breakup, & 21% were facing criminal proceedings. Further study of imminent risk factors is suggested.
