This article discusses two decisions by the US Supreme Court in June 1997 which held that patients do not have a constitutional right to assisted suicide & defended the constitutionality of state laws prohibiting the practice of assisted suicide against challenges from physicians & patients. Cases from Washington state & New York are reviewed. The significance of these rulings is discussed. (3 refs.)
