This article describes 5 school crises involving alcohol-related fatality, self-injurious behaviour, school homicide, racial/ethnic conflict, & community violence. In each example, errors in crisis management by school staff exacerbated the crisis & resulted in deleterious consequences for the school, students & the surrounding community. Common themes of leadership, teamwork & responsibility that are critical to successful crisis management are identified. (22 refs.)
