A review on alcohol/drug abuse among American Indians & Alaskan natives is provided. Indian suicide rates are 4 times the national average & 75% of Indian suicides involve alcohol. Aspects of Indian culture (e.g. peer influence) that encourage alcohol consumption are noted. Knowledge gaps in the literature are discussed, such as the lack of studies on urban Indian alcohol/drug abuse. Areas prevention efforts should focus on, and organizational & institutional needs are also discussed. (89 refs.)
