Results from a study of trends in suicide rates in Australia since 1920 were discussed in this presentation. Changes in demographic correlates & suicide methods were described. Variations in rates were discussed in relation to changing availability of methods of suicide with particular reference to coal gas & toxic pharmaceuticals. This session concluded with a discussion of the possible significance of the Australian experience for future prevention measures, particularly restriction of means.
