The completed suicide rate among inmates in NSW prisons is between 3-10 times higher than in the community, while the rate of attempted suicide is about 10-15 times higher. The reasons for the increased vulnerability of the prison population were discussed in this presentation, particularly factors which are located within the inmate population group & factors connected with the experience of prison itself. The impact of a screening procedure at the major reception prison was also reviewed.
