Suicide ideation & depression were examined in a sample of 40 police officers & 60 students in a justice studies course. The types of coping used by subjects in response to stressful incidents & the general background exposure to aversive events was also investigated. The study failed to find that police were at any special risk compared to people with an interest in the justice professions. Neither types of coping nor histories of life events discriminated between officers & potential recruits.
