The pattern of calls to an after-hours crisis telephone service for Vietnam veterans was surveyed over a 9-week period. 274 calls were received. Domestic conflict, substance abuse, traumatic memories, depression & anger at government represented the major problems requiring counselling. Crisis intervention was needed for 10% of calls because of suicide risk. 26% of callers at risk of suicide were intoxicated & 44% were not in any type of formal therapy at the time of their call.
