Attitudes toward suicide & euthanasia were surveyed among 16,455 noninstitutionalized American adults, aged 18 years & older. Support for suicide in the event of an incurable illness & the right to euthanasia decreased with age, yet increased with all age groups over time. Subjects most concerned with perceived control had the most support for euthanasia. The effects of capitalist, death-denying, immortalist-oriented, individualistic American culture & of gerontophobia are also considered.
