The construct validity of Calhoun’s Youth Suicide Scale (YSS) is evaluated. The YSS is an instrument that assesses reactions to youth suicide. 431 undergraduate psychology students completed the YSS which consisted of a fictitious newspaper article about an 18 year old male’s suicide, as well as questions asking about one’s view of the victim’s family, personal reaction & empathy with parents. The results show that the YSS is a valuable research tool for assessing reactions to youth suicide.
