The mortality of children diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus was investigated & common factors before death were identified. A cohort of 1854 cases aged 0-16 years from the Yorkshire Children’s Diabetes Register were studied for the period 1978-93. 26 deaths were identified; these included the suicide of one male. His death did not involve insulin. It was difficult to ascertain if female deaths due to hypoglycaemia were accidental deaths or suicide attempts. (21 refs.)
