Only 10 American states do not probihit assisted suicide. This study explores the social characteristics of these states using a factor analysis of 31 social indicators. Assisted suicide was more likely to be prohibited in states with an older population but this prohibition was not associated with factor scores for items such as social disorganization, & unemployment. The majority of significant correlates were related to age, the marriage rate & gross state product per capita. (2 refs.)
