The treatment needs of young, self-destructive, unstable borderline clients are discussed. A practice approach reformulated on recent research findings is presented. This approach uses strategies derived from trauma recovery & brief treatment to address self-destructiveness & high rates of attrition in this population as well as the demands of managed mental health care for briefer, more effective treatment. Goals & interventions for initial contact or the early stage of treatment are outlined.
