De Leo desribes the reduction of nonfatal suicidal behavior in elderly people, ie, unlike adolescents, most suicide attempts in this age group result in death. However, in 65-74 year olds, studies have found a higher incidence of nonfatal suicidal behavior than those in older age bands. Because of the difficulty in diagnosing depression in the elderly, as well as reduced health care contact, De Leo does not believe that suicide prevention is easier in the elderly. However, it should be pursued.
